109 A item in the Liverpool Echo, Oct 23rd 1918, headed 'Mother's Tragic Plight' stated: 'A drowning accident is reported from Burscough. At about 5 last evening Mrs Gibbon (sic) wife of a canal boatman of Burscough, was going along the Leeds and Liverpool towpath with three of her children when Elizabeth, aged 5 years, fell into the water. The distracted mother at once went into the canal, gripping the grass on the bank, and tried to reach the child, but failed. James Barrow, a boatman, recovered the body in about 10 minutes. 114 A note added to the 1911 census record for Sarah Ann and Thomas Hartley and gour children states: "Thomas Hartley is father of all the children, all of whom were born before marriage of parents". 124 A Randle Poole married Kitty Jones at Witton in 1799, with daughters Mary b1800 and Catherine b1803, so assumed not to be the same Randle.
Possibly in 1851 census at Davenham, labourer, age 72 b Leftwich, mistranscribed as Bandle Pool, lodging with Joseph Dutton.

125 A report headed 'Inquest at Burscough' in the Preston Chronicle, 14.5.1853, read: 'On Tuesday last an inquest was held at the house of Mr Richard Spencer, The Farmers Arms Inn, Burscough, before C E Driffield Esq, Coroner, and a respectable jury, touching the death of Thomas Smith, aged 18 months, son of William Smith of Burscough, boatman. It appeared from the evidence that on the preceding Friday night the child was playing about his father's door, and had not been more than 10 minutes out of his mother's sight when she found him drowned in a brook a few yards off. The brook skirts the common highway and, as there is no fence, the child it is supposed had fallen in.' Verdict: Accidental Death. Smith, Thomas (I14309)
 
126 A report in the Cheshire Observer, 18.7.1857 (a Saturday) reads:-
"FATAL FIGHT. On Saturday afternoon, Henry Ashton, a youth 19 years of age, employed as a boatman on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, was killed by Henry Webster, another boatman, at Shevington, near Chorley. For some time past a grievance had existed between the men, who were cousins, and on Saturday afternoon they met at Shevington and agreed to settle the difference by a stand-up fight. In the third round, Webster struck Ashton a blow in the region of the heart. Ashton fell from the effect of the blow, but rose again, and died immediately. Webster has given himself up to the police authorities."
The fight is assumed to have been on the preceding Saturday, July 11. Henry Webster was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for manslaughter on August 5,1857, a t Lancaster Assizes.

127 A report in the Lancashire Evening Post on June 25 1890, headed "Savage attack on a child by a dog" reads:- "Yesterday afternoon, Mrs Howard, wife of Joseph Howard, boatman, Burscough, went with her little boy, aged two years, to visit her father, Mr Job Gore, who resides on the canal bank, near Burscough. Mr Gore has a retriever dog chained to its kennel in the yard. The child was passing near the kennel when the dog flew at him, got him down, and made a ferocious attack on his face, chiefly about the head. The poor boy was completely covered with blood. Dr Laing was sent for, and he cauterised the wounds. The dog will be destroyed, but before that is done it will be examined by a veterinary surgeon." Howard, Job Gore (I09700)
 
128 A report in the Yorkshire Post, 11.09.1917, states that Mary was sent by her mother to buy bread in Burscough but did not return. Three loaves were seen floating in the canal and it was assumed that she was blown into the canal in a gale and her heavy coat carried her down. 129 A Richard Draper, 64 b Lathom, is in the 1881 census at Ashurst's Beacon, a colliery labourer with a wife Sarah, 65, b Liverpool. This would accord with a marriage at St Nicholas, Liverpool, 14.11.1875 to Sarah Davies, spinster of full age, residence Tithebarn St, father Thomas Davies, foreman, witnesses Robert and Alice Howard - except that Richard is listed as a bachelor, flatman, father James Draper, flatmen. The death certificate for this Sarah indicates that she died in Dalton, 26.1.1887, age 70, as wife of Richard Draper, colliery labourer, the informant being Mary Gaskell, daughter, present at the death. Draper, Richard (I02342)
