- Under the headline "Inquest on Lathom boatman's daughter" the Lancashire Evening Post reported on Aug 14 1931:-
Mr S Brighouse, the West Lancashire County Coroner, returned a verdict of ?Found drowned? at an inquest held, to-day, at the Council Offices, Burscough, on Mary Melling, 28, a single woman, daughter of Ralph Melling, a boatman, of Lord Street, Lathom, who was found drowned in the canal yesterday afternoon.
The evidence showed that she left home at half past 10 on Monday morning last, saying she was going to look for domestic service. She had been somewhat depressed of late. A farm labourer named John Wilshaw stated that he saw her go towards the canal and then walk along the bank. She was not wearing a hat and it was raining hard at the time. Her body was recovered not far from where he had seen her.
