    • Birthplace also given as Wigan in 1881, Abram 1901.
      An entry in Wigan canal records, dated 29.7.1887. names William, of 6 Cunliffe's Court, Plank Lane (Abram) as master of The Elizabeth, a horse-drawn narrow boat carring "Coal traffic generally; not a fly; this is an old boat low in cabin, and barely of the required capacity, but in fair order. The master has a house in plank Lane, and only himself and a son, 15 years (presumably John, who would have been 14), live on the boat.
      "Transferred to Rd Abel, Top Locks, Runcorn, renamed Ethel 28.8.1892. Broken up 12.2.1936."
