  No direct evidence that he was a boatman but his wife's entry in the 1861 census has a note saying: "Boatman absent with no family on the canal". There is an Edward Williams, 58, ag lab b Preston, across the Mersey in Windy Harbour, Poulton-cum-Spital, Bebington, boarding with the family of William Jones, a farm bailiff.
