1. | James (Smith) Robinson was born in 1837 in Burscough (son of James Robinson and Catherine Foster); died on 2 Jun 1908 in Girdlestone Street, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Other Events:
- Occupation: Carpenter, Port Elizabeth harbour
- Baptism: 8 Feb 1837, St John the Baptist, Burscough
Notes:
Apparently changed surname to Smith on arrival in South Africa in 1850s. Married as Smith, but no father named on MC. Subsequently told family that his birth name was Robinson. Death notice in the Port Elizabeth Herald states: "James Smith . . . late of Burscough Bridge, Lancashire . . ."
(Smith possibly maternal grandmother's maiden name. Information from his great-grandson Tony Smith of Tasmania, who has established a DNA match with James Robinson's 2X great-grandmother, Elizabeth Shelton.)
James married Catherine Mullins on 28 Jan 1862 in St Augustine, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Catherine was born in 1844. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
