Notes: Service record, obtained by Walter Jakeman, husband of a descendant, shows that John enlisted into the 80th Regiment of Foot at Congleton on Nov 25 1833, aged 22 years 6 months. He was absent without leave briefly in 1834, and deserted in August 1835. He was court-matialled and imprisoned for three months after rejoining in 1842, but gained credit for subsequent campaigns in India, where he won a medal in 1846, and in Burma. He was discharged after being declared medically unfit in 1854. John married Elizabeth Taylor about 1838. She was probably unaware that John, absent for nine years, was still alive when she married John Minshall as Betty Hough that year. Age given as 68 in death record. Notes: Not known if John and Elizabeth formally married, though there is a possible record on 14.3.1836 in Cheadle (Cheshire Bishop's Transcripts, Ancestry). This is some distance from their known residences, but would have been seven months after John deserted the Army and he may have deliberately chosen an unlikely location There is no evidence of another John or Elizabeth Hough around Cheadle in the 1841 census.
