Inquest report in Liverpool Mercury, 22.9.1866 "on the body of James Leach, about 57 years of age, the captain of the flat Worsley, belonging to the Bridgewater trust" states:
"The deceased, who had taken something to drink, on Wednesday evening went towards the Canning Dock. At an early hour yesterday morning police-constable 23 (Ackersley) heard a call for help. On proceeding in the direction whence the cry came, he observed the deceased, who was in the water, being held up by another man.
"Eventually a rope was placed round the deceased's body, by which he was rescued. He was taken to the receiving house, Prince's Dock, and every means adopted to restore him, but in vain as it was found that he was dead."
Verdict: Found drowned.
James married Elizabeth Orme on 10 Aug 1835 in St Elphin, Warrington. Elizabeth (daughter of Richard Orme and Alice Plumpton) was born on 22 Oct 1812 in Runcorn; died in 1857 in Runcorn. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
