  1. 1.  Philip Hampson was born on 23 May 1895 in Canal Street, Runcorn (son of Robert Owen Hampson and Eliza Isabella Cottier).

    Notes:

    Birth registered Q3 1895, but date given by Barnardo's Records Counselling and Support Service in Ilford, which states that he was admitted to the Liverpool Sheltering Home in May 1909, naming his mother as Isabella Hollingsworth and siblings as Owen and Jane. It adds that he left the UK aboard SS Corsican on May 20 1909. Other records show that the Corsican departed Liverpool on May 26 and arrived in Quebec on May 28.

    Two baptism records give mother's name Margaret, two Mary.
    Eliza and her son Philip appear as Hollingsworth in the 1901 census for Douglas, Isle of Man, where apparently she was jailed, and her children (including Philip) sent to Canada as 'Home Children'.
    A death is recorded in St Helens, 12.12.1910, of an Eliza Hollingsworth, 'widow of Thomas Hollingsworth, captain of sailing ship of 21 Peel Street, St Helens', informant Jenny Hollingsworth, daughter, of 34 Hall Street, St Helens.

    A 'Law Intelligence' report in the Isle of Man Times, 22.7.1876, records that Philip was found guilty of child neglect after turning to drink following the sudden death of his wife three weeks earlier. The judge had 'some sympathy' for him, and he was bound over (?10): sentence not recorded.
