- Robert's second wife died in 1878, and he appears as a widower in the 1881 census in Whitechapel Row, Weston, next to his first wife's Hulse family. Next to them (previous census page) is Mary Whitby, 29, with four apparently illegitimate children.
In 1891 he is again listed as a widower but with three children, Samuel 11, Mary 8, and Sarah A Musker 6, all born Weston Point, for whom no birth or other records have been found. They are believed to be children (by him) of Mary Whitby and are in the GRO Online Birth Index with no mother's maiden name given: Samuel Whitby, Q2 1881; Mary Emma, Q4 1882; and Sarah Ann, Q3 1884. A probable death is recorded for Mary, Q1 1885 Runcorn, age 33.
Samuel Whitby married Sarah Jane Miles, 1903 Runcorn and in 1911 is a chemical works fireman in Weston Point;
Mary E Whitby married Thomas F Robinson, 1902 Runcorn, but not found in 1911;
Sarah Ann Whitby married Charles James Littlemore, 1904 Runcorn, who in 1911 is an electrician's labourer in Weston.
