  • Notes
    • Received Royal Humane Society vellum certificate for attempting to save the life of William Cheetham, 8, (qv, son of Robert Cheetham, boatmen) who had fallen in to the canal.
A report in the Ormskirk Advertiser for Sept 10 1914, headed Lydiate Boatbuilder's Plucky Conduct reads: "On Tuesday July 14th a boy named William Cheetham of Lydiate accidentally fell into the canal while returning from school. An alarm was raised and Mr Lund rushed to the scene and dived into the canal two or three times, but was unsuccessfulin saving the boy. Shortly afterwards the body was recovered."
The report gives the date of the subsequent inquest also as July 14, which seems unlikely, so either the date of death or of the inquest is probably incorrect.
The report states that the jury complimented Mr Lund on his brave action and that the coroner said he would report the matter to the Royal Humane Society. The ensuing certificate was presented to Mr Lund on Sept 7 1914.
