- A report in the Lancashire Evening Post on June 25 1890, headed "Savage attack on a child by a dog" reads:- "Yesterday afternoon, Mrs Howard, wife of Joseph Howard, boatman, Burscough, went with her little boy, aged two years, to visit her father, Mr Job Gore, who resides on the canal bank, near Burscough. Mr Gore has a retriever dog chained to its kennel in the yard. The child was passing near the kennel when the dog flew at him, got him down, and made a ferocious attack on his face, chiefly about the head. The poor boy was completely covered with blood. Dr Laing was sent for, and he cauterised the wounds. The dog will be destroyed, but before that is done it will be examined by a veterinary surgeon."
