• Notes

  John's first wife Sarah was convicted of several crimes before and after marriage (HMP Wakefield records, Ancestry), and in the 1891 census they were separated - but next-door neighbours. John was living with his future wife Hannah Mary (later recorded as Polly) listed as his cousin, with two children by her. Sarah died in 1895 after which John and Polly married.
