A local press report stated that the barge captain, William Musker of Barnton, was not satisfied with the position of stone blocks just loaded, but in attempting to move the last block with a crowbar, the equilibrium of the boat was disturbed and it capsized. He saved himself by hanging on the the loading chain, but his wife and children were trapped in the cabin and went down with the boat. The dock was drained, but they were found dead.
